It takes up less space than a print booth and uses no paper at all. Often it's cheaper too.
GIFs, boomerangs and stills
Most digital booths have a few modes. A GIF strings several photos into a loop. A boomerang plays a tiny clip forwards then backwards, which turns a simple wave into something ridiculous. And they'll still take a normal photo if that's what someone wants.
Some also offer filters, digital props or a green screen that swaps the background. It all depends on the partner, so we'll list exactly what you're getting.
Instant sharing to phones
Sharing is the whole point. After their shot, guests usually scan a QR code on the screen, or type in a mobile number or email, and the file lands on their phone. From there it's straight into the group chat.
A big screen showing the latest GIFs on a loop is a nice extra if the partner offers it. It keeps a crowd round the booth all night.
You'll normally get a link to the full gallery after the event too. For businesses the files can carry your branding, which travels wherever they're shared, and that's why they're popular for corporate events.
What makes a good GIF
Movement. A GIF of someone standing still is just a slightly wobbly photo. The best ones have people jumping, throwing props, blowing kisses or doing a dramatic reveal from behind a sign.
The attendant usually helps here, especially early on before people have worked it out. After the first few, guests start coming up with their own ideas, and they get more ambitious as the night goes on.
Selfie booth hire for small spaces
Plenty of GIF and selfie booths are just a slim stand with an iPad or camera and a ring light. That makes selfie booth hire a good fit for bars, restaurants, small function rooms and busy exhibition stands.
You'll still need a socket and some standing room in front, about 2 metres deep. Setup is often quick, sometimes around half an hour.
Digital only, or digital plus prints
They're a natural fit for 18ths, 21sts, product launches and student events, anywhere the crowd lives on their phones. At a wedding, a GIF booth tends to sit alongside a print booth rather than replace it, because older guests usually want something to hold.
No printer means no paper, no ink and no queue waiting for prints. It can bring the price down. The trade-off is that guests don't walk away with something in their hand.
If you'd like both, some booths can do GIFs and still print a single frame. For bigger events, you could pair a GIF booth with a separate print booth.
A word about signal
Instant sharing needs an internet connection. Many partners bring their own mobile router, but basements and thick stone walls can kill the signal. Tell us about your venue, and if live sharing isn't possible, the files can usually be sent after the event instead.
